Media and Mass Murder

Media and Mass murderers

In the recent years in USA society has been challenged with tragedies like Sandy Hook or Aurora shooting. As every day goes and many people have raised questions of why these kind of tragedies keep happening to our country and our society; with questions that no one seems to find the right answers, many doubts and topics that relate to the possible facts that might influence these kind of horror episodes, that have brought so many tears and pain to each one of us, come to the table.

In many debates about these tragedies many people have pointed a finger on Media as well. Many have said that some of the tragedies have been imitating episodes of movies. Therefore, many have requested to stop releasing or producing films/movies that advertise violence and death. This topic can be seen in many viewpoints where one can agree or disagree. Films can advertise violence, however they do advertise the result of violence in punishment and tragic endings. So, the effect of movies and films in these tragedies remains obscure.

After reading articles about film and the affects on violence I came across an article that talked about how often media talks about the individuals responsible to these mass shooting, how often their picture is shown in TV, social networks, magazines, newspapers and so on. How often their name is mentioned over and over again. These individuals somehow become famous.  In these actions media is not only advertising the shooter and his action it is also telling the next individual planning something horrifying like this, of how popular he will be, how no one will forget his name or his picture.

Past observation has shown that previous murders have been somehow suffering from some type of mental disorder and also social interaction. Saying this, it is more than obvious that these type of individuals can be very much affected by stimulus like media since their reason for horrible and obscure action varies from revenge towards society, looking for attention and so on.

If we stop mentioning the murder name, if we don’t show their picture, if we as a society do not pay attention to who the murder was, if we ignore his/her persona will not immediately stop this kind of tragedies. However, it is a step that might have an effect. It is something that has not been done before and which might result as positive. In my opinion it is better leaving these murders in the dark by referring to them as the murder or other synonyms, rather than writing their names in every single paper or headline news.

We might dress up during Halloween as ‘The Joker’ , but I think the bigger issue here is how Media is advertising the this shooters , how is turning them into “bed heroes”.

What is your opinion in this issue? Do you think Media is influencing somehow the next shooter or there is no correlation at all between these two.

WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO US?

WARRIOR is ART!

Warrior!

Warrior is a movie of 2011 by Gavin O’Connor. It is a movie that takes place in the world of mixed martial arts, in Pittsburgh. To some it may look like “Rocky” or “The Fighter” however a glimpse at the trailer makes us all wonder how good this movie can be.  It is an engaging, thrilling, heart-stopping and very emotional film. For some it is one of the best films in the last decade.

The Warrior has a star like cast.  The technique and discipline used in this stunning film are superb. There was only one goal in the director’s mind, and that was to knock us out with such amazing script and talent.

Tom Hardy plays an ex-marine, younger brother Tommy Connlon who comes back after 14 years.  Tommy’s style reminds the audience of the former boxing legend Mike Tyson.  He is big, fast, hard-hitting and dedicated to bring down the other guy. He is simply brutal. With the help of his fathers training skills Tommy turns from a deserter into hero overnight.

Nick Nolte plays  Paddy Connlon, an ex- alcoholic, apologetic father, who after winning a very long battle with alcohol addiction tries to make the best of what is left of his miserable life. He is a broken down old man who has no contact with his sons or his nieces. His only consolation is an audio book version of “Moby-Dick.”

Joel Edgerton plays Brandan Connlon, the older brother who is about to lose his house and worry about fixing his little girl’s heart problem.  An ex-mixed martial arts sensation turned a physics teacher. At one point we hear him say to his students. ”Force equals mass times acceleration.” A teacher loved by all of his student, who fights in parking lots for some extra cash to support his family. His fighting style is much different from that of his brother.

Sparta is the biggest event in mixed martial arts (same as UFC in USA) , a $5 million winner take all tournament. And  its champion is an undefeated Russian (Kurt Angle). What will happen in “Sparta” is never really in doubt. What is in doubt is how things unfold for the Connlon family.  Brandan fights for his family. Tommy fights for his fallen best friend’s family.

This movie is so beautifully put together that it a world apart from what we have seen in the last few years. It is poetic to a degree. Emotions run deep and the way these emotions are portrayed by these superb actors through the camera lens are simply majestic.

An art on it self! Yes there is guys stripping down to their shorts with busted knuckles, and there is sweat and blood. Even though this movie may seem as a “fighting” movie in reality it is about fighting for love. There are two brothers and a father who don’t talk to each other.  Only to be put against each other once more for what’s most worth it.

This movie contributes a lot to our culture. It shows us the humanity we have lost for so long. Many of us have forgotten the real important thing in life. Sure money and fame are nice to have, but without family all we have is nothing.  It is a modern form of Picasso’s paintings. A modern way to reflect Michelangelo’s painting and sculptures. So much passion, emotion, colors reflected from this film. A much more educative film than “The Kardashians’ Show.” This movie is at the top as far as art is concerned. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat.

HOW GREAT IS ELECTRONIC MEDIA?

 Image

It is 2013 and electronic media is becoming more and more present in our lives.  We spent most of our time surrounded by electronic devices. It is a part of us by now. We encounter electronic media in everything we do, and everywhere we go.  To some electronic media is the greatest thing to happen to humanity; to others it has many downsides.

There are many things that would qualify as “Pros” about electronic media.

Pros include…

Cell phones are a big part of our lives. The majority of us have at least one. Every year there are new types of cell phones on the market. Nowadays we have something called “smartphone.”  A cell phone now operates like a computer; it is just smaller and more practical. Every parent gets a cell phone for his or her child because it is sometimes looked at as a safe device. Not only are they used for daily activities, such as calling and texting. They can also be used to check the weather for instance, therefore avoiding accidents. Papers can be written and then instantly printed or e-mailed. They have GPS in case one needs to find his or her way to the desired destination. Parents can look up the phones location because of the signal launched by the GPS and know the whereabouts of their children.

Televisions are probably one of the biggest form of electronic media. We can be aware of what is going on in the world with just a look at the TV. There are many TV stations that are very accurate on delivering the news. Staying informed about the world we live in can be life saving. There have been plenty of times when we hear on the news that someone went on a killing spree. This is a good thing because it raises awareness.

Radio is another big tool in electronic media. When we are driving and we are tired of the cd’s we listen to, we can just turn on the radio and boredom is gone. With so many radio stations it is impossible not to find the radio station that best suits our style. There is more than music and talk shows on the radio. How many times have we wondered if there was any traffic on the journey we were about to embark on?  Turn the radio on and we will be notified about the accidents happening and the best routes to take.

Last but not least is the Internet a tool expanding every day. There is nothing we cannot find on the Internet. As long as mankind has discovered something it will be posted online. If we need information about anything we just open the browser and search. It is one of the fastest and easiest ways to obtain knowledge.

Cons include…

Like every good thing even electronic media has its downsides.

Child molesters are always on the look out for their next “Pray” and the Internet is their favorite tool for hunting.  It is crucial that parents monitor their children whenever they are online.  It is easy to start chatting to a stranger online.  With so many perverted people out there the Internet has turned into a mass recruiting form for these people.

“Always online” is a term used when people post something online. Even if we delete it later, it is still visible for the skilled people to find out things about us. Facebook has become a huge social network. Now Facebook has turned into CIA’s best information database. With around 800 million users, pictures and personal information is available to anyone who is skilled enough to use a computer. Even if we delete our account there information is still available for anyone to see.  This is a loss of privacy.

Health is another concern that electronic media brings to my attention. During a car ride, or a walk to school we encounter people listening to music through their headphones. When the music is too loud and so close to the eardrums is starts damaging them. Due to research it has been proven that cell phones damage the heart and lower the sperm count in males if kept close to the body.  Computer screens also release low levels of X-rays radiation. The symptoms may not be visible immediately but with time they will.

I believe the way we interact with electronic media is crucial tour behavior.  Everything we see on TV, hear on the radio or come across online affects the way we behave and think. The brain is like a sponge. It absorbs information when given. Whenever we watch TV we are immediately affected by it for good or bad depending on what we are watching and our mood. Same goes for the radio and the internet.

Albert Einstein once said “I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots.” This does not mean technology is bad. Technology is great to a certain extent. It can save lives but it has to be used with moderation.
